The map for this week is of the UWF campus including 3 jpg images: an image of the north side of campus, an image of the south side of campus, and a survey parcel of the Heritage Hall Building. Each unknown raster image of the campus was georeferenced to known vector data. In this case, we had known campus building and road vector data. Although I went through the tedious task of creating control points, deleting, and then recreating control points to get a RMS error of less than 15, I find the concept super interesting. I also learned about editing tools under the Edit Toolbar. Specifically, I used the Create Tool under the Features Group to add a building to the Building layer and a new line feature to the UWF Roads layer.
I also had the opportunity to re-visit my Buffer Tool skills, creating a multi-ring buffer around a known eagles nest. The Bald Eagles nest was identified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) in the Baars Firestone Wildlife Sanctuary bordering campus. The FWC requires a 330-foot conservation easement and a 660-foot protected area around the nest. In the map, this is represented by two rings around the nest. This protected area helps prevent certain types development in the area!
